Horse Trailer Buyers Guide

Horse trailers help you get your horse or horses from one place to another safely, efficiently and comfortably. Depending on your towing vehicle, your number of horses and your particular needs, there are many options to consider when buying a horse trailer.

Types of Horse Trailers

Horse trailers are often classified by the hitch and how they’re towed. Within each category, there are several options, including different loading types (horse trailers are sometimes also classified by loading type), giving you many options when considering the size, type and loading style of your horse trailer.

  • Bumper-pull horse trailers are easy to hitch and tow and built in sizes to accommodate one, two or three horses.
  • Gooseneck horse trailers are good for multiple horses or large horses. With more space and the potential for more stalls, you can carry up to four horses safely and comfortably.
  • Fifth-wheel horse trailers are gooseneck horse trailers but use a fifth-wheel hitch.
  • Semi-truck horse trailers also use fifth-wheel hitches and can only be towed by semi-trucks. These very large trailers are used for moving many (10 or more) horses and almost always have exceptional living quarters.
  • Living quarters horse trailers include a full living space (bed, kitchen, bathroom and more) for those who prefer to stay in their trailers when traveling or want to relax during downtime at events.
  • Slant-load horse trailers are simple to load and unload (the horses exit head-first). Horses travel in a diagonal position.
  • Straight-load horse trailers, sometimes called walk-through trailers, are affordable and can transport one to four horses.
  • Center-load horse trailers allow for individual loading and unloading of the horses via ramps in the middle, and during transport, some horses are in the front and others are in the back, facing away from each other.
  • Reverse-load horse trailers let horses face the rear during travel and load similarly to slant-load trailers, but in reverse.
  • Side-load horse trailers use side ramps to get horses into slant stalls.

Horse Trailer Common Sizes and Capacities

[body]Horse trailers can be significantly different in size, depending largely on how many horses are being transported. Here are some of the most common sizes and capacities:

  • Length and width and height: Bumper-pull trailers most often measure between 7 and 7.5 feet tall, 15 feet long and 7-8 feet wide. Gooseneck and fifth-wheel horse trailers might be a little taller, still around 7-8 feet wide but often reach 45 feet or more in length. Semi-truck horse trailers frequently approach 12 feet in height, the maximum 8.5 feet in width 45 feet or more in length.
  • Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR): A small horse trailer will usually have a GVWR of 7,000-8,000 pounds. Larger trailers, particularly fifth-wheel and semi-truck horse trailers, can have a significantly higher GVWR.
  • Payload capacity: Subtract the weight of the trailer from the GVWR and get the payload capacity, which puts the payload capacity of small horse trailers around 4,300 pounds.
  • Tongue weight: The recommended tongue weight (downward force exerted on the hitch ball by the trailer’s tongue or coupler) for horse trailers is 10-15% of the trailer’s total weight, including the load.

Towing and Hitch Needs for Horse Trailers

The right towing vehicle and the right hitch are essential to a safe, smooth hauling experience of any horse trailer.

  • Hitch type: Some horse trailers use ball hitches, but depending on the size and payload capacity, a horse trailer will need a fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitch.
  • Hitch class and rating: Hitch classes range from Class I to Class V and most bumper-pull horse trailers require at least a Class III hitch but might require up to a Class V hitch. Gooseneck trailers require gooseneck hitches and fifth-wheelers require fifth-wheel hitches.
  • Towing vehicle capacity: Check our Tow Guide that contains a tool to estimate your towing capacity. You can also check your owner’s manual to find your towing vehicle’s gross combined weight rating (GCWR) and make sure you can safely tow your loaded trailer.
  • Braking systems: Horse trailers towed behind your vehicle will have electric, hydraulic or surge brakes to assist with control and stopping while towing heavy loads. Tail lights, turn signals and reflectors are often required by law.

Horse Trailer Pricing

From the basic essentials to the largest semi-truck horse trailers, prices unsurprisingly vary. The size, type and construction (aluminum is typically the most expensive, followed by a combination of aluminum and steel, with steel trailers being the least expensive) also impact the price. Bumper-pull trailers will start around $4,000-$6,000 and go up depending on add-ons and amenities whereas massive semi-truck horse trailers with living quarters can reach well into the six-figure price range.

Horse Trailer Add-ons and Extras

Just about every detail of a horse trailer can be customized, from tack storage to general storage, interior amenities and, especially on trailers with living quarters, you can make the living quarters as comfortable as your budget and imagination allows.
